The Sigma Nu Fraternity is proud of its tradition of being founded in direct opposition to any form of hazing. We believe that no student at the University of Illinois should even consider joining a fraternity that allows hazing, of any type, or that requires such a significant time commitment from you, as a candidate for membership (pledge), that it would affect your academic performance.
During the 106-year history of our chapter at the University of Illinois, we have never had a hazing incident. You and your parents are invited to speak to our alumni advisors, current members and candidates for membership (pledges), or to review our LEAD (LEVEL 1) Education Program, or attend any event, other than our Ritual, to confirm that what we say about hazing is absolutely true.
NO HAZING ALLOWED
The University of Illinois Sigma Nu Chapter also offers the following written No Hazing Policy:
As a candidate for membership or as an active member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity at the University of Illinois you will not be subject to hazing of any type. The Sigma Nu Fraternity defines hazing as:
“...any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off Fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: paddling in any form; creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; quest, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or any other such activities carried on outside or inside the confines of the chapter house; the wearing of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; late work sessions which interfere with scholastic activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with fraternal law or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution.”
By receiving an invitation to enter the candidate program at the Sigma Nu Fraternity you will have demonstrated to our active membership that you are willing and able to make a valuable contribution to our fraternity and to the greater University of Illinois community. You will have demonstrated a respect for and a commitment to our fraternity. Our fraternity honors and respects men who have made such a commitment. As such, our candidate program is a positive experience focused on building lasting friendships, unity, and brotherhood. Hazing, in any form, is in direct opposition to the positive approach of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and is never tolerated.
We are proud to state this policy in writing in no uncertain terms. We also provide a blank copy of this Policy, and should you decide to join another fraternity, we recommend that you get that fraternity’s officers to sign this No Hazing Policy.
Sincerely,
William Niemira
